A Quick Fix for a Sloppy Fit
by Aaron Kohler

I recently had to service a die due to the guide pins (for the steel strip) becoming loose in their bores. After a quick examination of the parts in question, it was determined that the tip I describe was all that was needed to get the die back in service.

I keep a large ball of hardened steel, salvaged from an old ball bearing, in my toolbox. Simply place the ball on the oversized hole and give it a firm, square blow from a hammer, then turn the part over and repeat the process on the other side. By doing this you displace just enough material to allow the pin to be pressed back in and will remain in place.

If no ball of hardened steel is on hand, use the ball pein end of your hammer and a brass or copper hammer as the driver.

This method of displaying material can also be used to keep a pin from falling out of a slip fit hole, by peining just one end of the hole.
