New Life for an Old Bearing
by Barry Sweetman

The distributor in my 1924 Hudson has a ball bearing with unique top and bottom races and a shoulder on the upper race.

My searches didn’t turn up any NOS (new old stock) bearings and I could not find a modern bearing with an equivalent size and that odd shoulder.

The wear and pitting were not too severe, so I mounted a fine Dremel grinding stone in the tool post of my lathe, with the compound set to match the angle of the races. Using plenty of lubricant, I turned the parts at a fairly high RPM and was able to remove the wear from both pieces relatively easily. The bearing was assembled with  new balls and it should be good for another 97 years!
