Smooth Jaw Plier Tip
by Roger Taylor

I’ve used this handy tool modification many times, on all types of materials for repairs and fabrications. As you can see in the photos, this is a small Vise-Grip plier knock-off, the kind sold at home improvement stores.

It’s a little hard to see, but I removed the serrated jaw grooves using a Ø3/4″ mounted abrasive point (stone) in the drill press. Press lightly and move the jaw up and down until the serrations are gone. Grind one jaw at a time – we don’t want to accidentally clamp the handle and have the pliers spin or fly across the shop!

In this case, the modified pliers were used to hold the painted surface of a small lamp stub so the threads could be chased.
