Scale Restoration

by Roger Taylor

When I can’t find any of the ten or more 6″ scales I have, I know it’s time to clean up the shop! A recent cleaning found three forgotten 6″ scales in my toolbox, all quality “old school” scales from Starrett and Lufkin but they were barely readable from accumulated corrosion and the dulling of the steel surface.

These scales were manufactured prior to the satin-chrome finishes of today’s measuring tools. An overnight soaking in EvapoRust removed the corrosion but left a fairly even black smut on the rules’ surfaces. After drying, a little rubbing with a maroon ScotchBrite pad cleaned them up nicely, leaving the black smut down in the engraved graduations so they were again quite easy to see.

Not quite as visible as the satin-chrome models but still very useable and much better than throwing them away.
